The Injury Remains

The Injury Remains
An image that persists
Kafuku cannot forget the image of his wife in another man's arms. He describes it as a demon attached to a corner of his mind, still present after her death.
Waiting for grief to dissolve it does not work; the image seems to grow more powerful instead.
Rage seeks an outlet
Kafuku begins to believe that he must get rid of the anger somehow. The unresolved hurt narrows his attention toward the man connected to the final affair.
His pain is real, but his intended response threatens to turn it into harm for someone else.
Friendship as a Trap

Friendship as a Trap
A hidden plan
Kafuku decides to pretend to be Takatsuki's friend so that the younger man will lower his defenses. He expects that drinking will eventually expose a weakness he can use.
The prospect of friendship therefore begins as a means of surveillance.
An uncertain target
Kafuku has no specific flaw in mind and assumes one will surface with time. His plan is less a considered strategy than an expression of his desire to make Takatsuki pay.
Every meeting carries the risk that Kafuku's anger will become a deliberate act.
The Intended Scandal

The Intended Scandal
Exploiting vulnerability
Kafuku imagines using whatever weakness he finds to create a scandal and ruin Takatsuki's reputation. He considers the consequences of Takatsuki's divorce struggle, particularly the possibility that he could lose access to his son.
The plan aims to injure Takatsuki where Kafuku believes he is most vulnerable.
A moral threshold
Kafuku understands that the intended harm would go far beyond expressing anger about the affair. His imagined retaliation could damage a parent-child relationship and a public career.
He admits the darkness of the plan to Misaki rather than carrying it out in secret.
The Plan Goes Unused

The Plan Goes Unused
Affection interrupts strategy
As Kafuku spends time with Takatsuki, he finds that he likes him. He sees the man's limitations and weaknesses, but also recognizes his affection for Kafuku's wife and his grief over her death.
The planned revenge does not turn into an attack.
A more complicated feeling
Kafuku admits that he was never able to understand why his wife chose Takatsuki. The man's relative ordinariness even makes Kafuku feel insulted, exposing how much pride is mixed with sorrow.
His feelings have become too complicated to reduce to punishment alone.
Anger Without Action

Anger Without Action
A confession instead of revenge
Kafuku tells Misaki what he had intended to do. By the time he describes the plan, he says that much of the rage has already disappeared, perhaps without his recognizing exactly when.
He did not expose Takatsuki or interfere with his access to his child.
Restraint and relief
Misaki is glad that he did not seriously hurt anyone. Kafuku agrees that the outcome was better, though he cannot give a neat account of how he reached it.
The conflict resolves through non-action and a changed emotional state rather than a confrontation between the two men.
