Millie Wins Second Place in the Pageant
Dumplin'Millie’s second-runner-up finish at the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant gives her a public moment of recognition: she receives roses and offers the poised wave of a seasoned contestant, while Willowdean watches from the sidelines.
The Final Rounds
As the pageant continues, Willowdean watches the contestants answer questions. Amanda wins the judges over with a deliberately awful knock-knock joke; Hannah’s dry answers leave the audience thinking. Millie, by contrast, comes across as sweet and charming, her infectious giggle part of the impression she makes onstage.
Millie’s Placement
Willowdean stays long enough to hear the result: Millie is second runner-up. Holding a bouquet of roses, Millie gives the polished beauty-queen wave that suits the pageant’s public ritual. The placement marks a visible achievement for the contestant Willowdean affectionately thinks of as their little Millicent.
Willowdean Leaves
Willowdean does not stay for the winner’s crowning; Millie’s result is enough for her to witness. She walks into the lobby clutching the sparkling cider Lee Wei and Dale gave her, carrying the pageant’s celebrations into the next scene rather than waiting for its final announcement.
