Cadillac Ranch

Dumplin'

Cadillac Ranch is a public art installation near Amarillo, Texas, and an assigned landmark for Willowdean’s opening number in the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant. Its familiar, weathered cars and ever-changing paint distinguish it from the grander landmarks associated with Texas, making it both a real place in the story and the unlikely model for a handmade pageant prop.

The Installation and Its Setting

The installation consists of old Cadillacs buried nose-first in a row beside the highway. Their paint has faded over time, and visitors are encouraged to spray-paint them, so the work’s appearance is not fixed: people who come to see it can leave their own marks. Rather than a polished monument, Cadillac Ranch is presented as an accessible, participatory roadside artwork.

An Offbeat Texas Landmark

Willowdean has barely considered Cadillac Ranch since it was assigned to her at dance rehearsal. As she tries to think of a way to represent it, she places it among Texas’s lesser-known attractions, alongside the Marfa lights, Jacob’s Well, Dinosaur Valley, and the Prada sculpture. To her, Cadillac Ranch is distinctly Texan without merely repeating a stereotype of the state. That tension—recognizable yet unconventional—is what makes the landmark interesting to her and gives the assignment more substance than ordinary pageant decoration.

From Landmark to Pageant Prop

With the opening number approaching, Willowdean begins making a prop from a large cardboard box, paint, and scissors. Her mother joins in: she cuts the cardboard with an X-ACTO knife, asks Willowdean to fetch elastic, a glue gun, and spray paints from the garage, and helps turn the box into a Cadillac-shaped prop. They paint it together, and by one in the morning the kitchen is scattered with spray-painted newspaper and cardboard scraps. The finished cardboard Cadillac is covered in spray paint and hangs from Willowdean’s shoulders on elastic, translating the installation’s row of painted cars into a deliberately playful wearable object. In the process, Cadillac Ranch connects Willowdean’s pageant preparation with a rare moment of collaboration and laughter between her and her mother.
