Ender and Petra

Ender Wiggin and Petra Arkanian first meet in the barracks of Salamander Army, where Ender, a newly promoted six-year-old, is immediately an outcast. Petra, the only girl in the army, is also marginalized, and she introduces herself with characteristic boldness, declaring, "I'm Petra Arkanian. The only girl in Salamander Army. With more balls than anybody else in the room." Despite the jeers of the other soldiers, Petra recognizes a kindred spirit in Ender's isolation and offers him friendship, saying, "I'm a girl, and you're a pissant of a six-year-old. We have so much in common, why don't we be friends?" This initial connection is forged in the crucible of Bonzo Madrid's contempt, as both are treated as outsiders by the commander and the rest of the army.

Early Mentorship and Training

Petra becomes Ender's first real teacher in the Battle School. Recognizing his complete lack of training, she offers to practice with him during off-hours, telling him, "If you want, I'll take you in the off hours and show you some of the things I know. I'm not a great soldier, but I'm pretty good, and I sure know more than you." Their morning sessions in the battleroom are foundational to Ender's development as a soldier. Petra teaches him the crucial skill of aiming with his whole arm, explaining, "Something most soldiers don't realize is that the farther away your target is, the longer you have to hold the beam within about a two-centimeter circle. It's the difference between a tenth of a second and a half a second, but in battle that's a long time." She also imparts the importance of holding one's own motion and the enemy's motion in mind simultaneously, and of relaxing the body to avoid trembling. Ender, in turn, proves an apt pupil, and Petra's assessment is both encouraging and honest: "You don't have any bad habits," she says, to which he replies, "I don't have any good ones, either," and she answers, "I give you those." This mentorship is not one-sided; Ender's own tactical brilliance begins to emerge, and Petra is among the first to witness it.

Rivalry and Respect in the Battle Room

As Ender rises through the ranks, their relationship shifts from teacher-student to that of fellow commanders. When Ender is made commander of Dragon Army, Petra is commander of Phoenix Army, and they face each other in battle. Ender's victory over Phoenix is decisive, but it strains their friendship. Petra is not gracious in defeat; the anger in her eyes seems to say, "I was your friend, and you humiliate me like this?" Ender, however, understands that her fury is born of pride, and he hopes that "after a few more battles, she'd realize that in fact she had scored more hits against him than he expected anyone ever would again." He continues to learn from her tactics, teaching his toon leaders how to counter the tricks she had played on them. This rivalry, though painful, deepens their mutual respect, as each recognizes the other's skill and intelligence.

Shared Trials in Command School

Years later, both are selected for Command School, where they serve as squadron leaders under Ender's overall command in the simulator battles that are, unbeknownst to them, the real Third Invasion. Petra is one of Ender's most trusted and brilliant commanders, but the relentless pressure of the campaign takes its toll. In one battle, Petra leads her force too far, becomes exposed, and loses nearly all her ships. Ender, forced to salvage the battle, is unable to save her remaining fighters. Afterward, he can hear Petra crying out, "Tell him I'm sorry, I was just so tired, I couldn't think, that was all, tell Ender I'm sorry." This breakdown marks a turning point in their relationship. Petra is no longer the confident, swaggering girl of Salamander Army; she is a broken soldier, and Ender, who had pushed her too hard because of her brilliance, must now ease the pressure on her. She is never as quick or daring again, and Ender can no longer use her in the most demanding assignments. Petra, however, understands and tells him so, acknowledging that he had no other choice. This shared experience of failure and recovery binds them in a way that success never could.

Reunion and Aftermath

After the war, when Ender awakens from his exhausted sleep on Eros, Petra is among the first to visit him. She takes his hand and tells him about the truce on Earth, and when he asks who won the recent conflict, she answers, "We did, Ender. You were there." Their reunion is marked by a profound tenderness. Ender, overwhelmed by emotion, begins to cry and embraces Petra and Bean, saying, "I missed you. I wanted to see you so bad." Petra, in turn, kisses his cheek and reassures him, "You saw us pretty bad," and "I saw you magnificent," Ender replies, acknowledging that he had used up his best commanders too soon. This moment of vulnerability and affection reveals the depth of their bond, which has survived rivalry, pressure, and the horrors of war. Petra's presence in Ender's life is a constant thread, from the early days of mentorship to the final victory, and their friendship stands as a testament to the human connections that endure even in the most dehumanizing circumstances.
