Malephar exorcism cross
Exorcist FallsThe Malephar exorcism cross is the cross Jason Crowder wields to drive Malephar out of Casey Hartman. During an exorcism shaped by prayer and spoken commands, it becomes both an instrument of resistance and the source of the one visible mark left on Casey after his other wounds heal.
Use During the Exorcism
The cross is associated with the rite through Jason’s own recollection: he identifies it as the cross he wielded to drive the demon out. The exorcism proceeds through spoken prayer and ritual response. Father Sutherland reads, “Deliver us, Lord, from sin,” and Jason answers, “Deliver us, O Lord.” The cross belongs to this larger confrontation, in which the participants invoke religious authority against the force tormenting Casey.
As the rite intensifies, Casey’s legs contort under the force Malephar exerts on his body. Jason rises with the Bible Father Sutherland has given him and rebukes the demon, demanding that it leave the child; Father Sutherland joins him in ordering it to depart in the name of Christ. The account links the cross to the exorcism’s decisive purpose, but does not establish that the object acts independently of the prayers, scripture, or the people performing the rite.
The Mark Left on Casey
The exorcism leaves Casey with severe bodily injuries: Malephar’s force damages his knees and wrists, and one hand is left a bloody mass of bone and tissue. Yet Jason recalls that these injuries, along with the other wounds on Casey’s body, heal. The exception is the brand of the cross on Casey’s chest.
Jason immediately identifies that mark with the cross he had wielded to expel Malephar. The contrast gives the object a lasting presence in the aftermath: Casey’s injuries recede, but the cross-shaped brand remains. The narrative thus associates the cross not only with the demon’s expulsion but also with the bodily trace that survives the ordeal.
Narrative Significance
The cross is presented through its place in an enacted religious rite, rather than through a description of its material or design. Its significance comes from the contrast between the violence Malephar inflicts on Casey and the exorcists’ effort to reclaim his body through prayer, scripture, and the cross. The persistent brand distinguishes the exorcism from the other injuries that heal, making the cross’s mark the clearest enduring sign of what happened.
