Amos Bracken

Fire & Blood

Amos Bracken was a knight of House Bracken and a supporter of King Aegon II during the Dance of the Dragons. His brief role in the conflict is defined by the Battle of the Burning Mill, where he killed his family’s rival, Lord Samwell Blackwood, only to die in the same fighting. His fall left the Bracken host to retreat under another commander and helped bring about the collapse of Aegon’s remaining support in the riverlands.

Identity and Allegiances

Amos had earlier won a duel for the favor of Rhaenyra Targaryen, but when House Bracken declared for Aegon, he followed his father’s allegiance. That choice placed him on the opposing side from Samwell Blackwood, who raised Rhaenyra’s banners over Raventree. Their earlier contest for Rhaenyra’s favor thus preceded a far more consequential conflict between their houses during the war.

The Battle of the Burning Mill

When the Brackens assembled a force to answer raids from Raventree, Samwell Blackwood surprised them as they camped beneath a riverside mill. The ensuing battle lasted for hours amid the burning mill. Amos led the Bracken host from Stone Hedge and met Samwell in single combat, killing him. The victory did not secure the field: Amos was soon killed by an arrow that pierced his helm.

The account attributes the shot to Samwell’s sixteen-year-old sister, Alysanne Blackwood, later known as Black Aly, but treats this identification as uncertain. It may have been true, or merely a family legend; the record does not settle the matter. The uncertainty leaves Amos’s death attached both to the documented turn of the battle and to a story whose authorship cannot be confirmed.

Defeat and Consequences

After Amos’s death and other heavy losses, the Bracken force broke and fled toward its own lands under the command of his bastard half-brother, Ser Raylon Rivers. The retreat proved disastrous: while the host was away, Prince Daemon Targaryen and forces loyal to Rhaenyra captured Stone Hedge. With Lord Humfrey Bracken and members of his household held captive, Raylon yielded rather than risk their harm.

The fall of Stone Hedge broke House Bracken’s resistance. The last of King Aegon’s supporters in the riverlands lost heart and laid down their arms. Amos’s death therefore marked more than the loss of a battlefield leader: it came amid a reversal that carried the fighting from the mill to the Bracken stronghold and helped end organized resistance to Rhaenyra in the region.
