Blackhaven

Fire & Blood

Blackhaven is the seat of Lord Harmon Dondarrion and a stronghold seized by the Vulture King during the Dornish rebellion. Its capture turned a lord’s contemptuous judgment of the rebel force into a direct challenge to his own authority, and its destruction preceded Dondarrion’s return to the struggle against the Vulture King.

The Vulture King’s seizure

Harmon Dondarrion had described the Vulture King’s followers as an unruly rabble and dismissed them as a force that could be detected long before it arrived. The rebels soon stormed Blackhaven and took the castle, decisively contradicting that confidence. The Vulture King then put Blackhaven to the torch and marched away, leaving the stronghold both captured and burned.

Dondarrion and the counterattack

Blackhaven’s fall did not remove Harmon Dondarrion from the conflict. Later, after the Vulture King abandoned the siege of Nightsong, Lady Caron joined forces with marchers led by Dondarrion, now described as the mutilated Lord of Blackhaven. Together with Samwell Tarly’s force from Horn Hill, they confronted the Vulture King’s army from front and rear. The rebels broke and fled; the pursuing marcher lords cut them down in the action later called the Vulture Hunt.

Place in the rebellion

Blackhaven is presented through a sharp reversal: Dondarrion’s written scorn is followed by the seizure and burning of his own seat, then by his reappearance among the forces that defeat the rebel king. The castle’s capture marks the Vulture King’s reach, while Dondarrion’s later participation ties Blackhaven to the campaign’s reversal. The account does not describe the castle’s subsequent rebuilding or occupation.
