Brandon the Burner

Fire & Blood

Brandon the Burner was the son and heir of Brandon the Shipwright, whose doomed expedition across the Sunset Sea became an earlier precedent for westward voyages. After his father and his fleet disappeared, Brandon burned the shipyards where the ships had been built; the act fixed his name in history as Brandon the Burner.

Family and the Lost Fleet

Thousands of years before the Conquest, while the Kings of Winter still ruled the North, Brandon the Shipwright built an entire fleet to cross the Sunset Sea and led it west himself. He never returned. His son and heir was another Brandon, later remembered not for continuing the voyage but for destroying the yards that had made it possible.

The Burning and Its Legacy

The account records the burning without giving Brandon’s motive or describing what became of the fleet beyond its failure to return. The contrast is stark: his father’s westward ambition left behind ships that vanished beyond the known world, while the son’s defining act was to burn their place of construction. The epithet Brandon the Burner endured forevermore, making him a brief but memorable counterpoint to the persistent dream of discovering what lay across the Sunset Sea.
