Claw Isle

Fire & Blood

Claw Isle is associated in the account with Edwell Celtigar’s lordship and his changing place in royal government. Its clearest appearances trace a reversal: Edwell left the island to serve the Crown, then returned after his dismissal as master of coin, while the unpopular taxes imposed during his tenure were struck down.

Lordship and Royal Service

Edwell Celtigar is identified as Lord of Claw Isle. After serving as Hand under Maegor, he was recalled to King’s Landing during Jaehaerys’s regency and appointed lord treasurer and master of coin. His return to court made Claw Isle a point of connection between the royal administration and a lord who had previously held one of its highest offices.

Taxes and Dismissal

As master of coin, Edwell imposed new levies that failed to replenish the Crown’s treasury. In King’s Landing, port fees were tripled, some goods were taxed both on entering and leaving the city, and innkeepers and builders faced additional charges. The measures instead slowed building, emptied inns, and diverted merchant shipping to other ports; the taxes also made Edwell deeply unpopular in the capital.

Jaehaerys dismissed him from office and repealed his taxes by royal decree three days into the young king’s rule. Edwell left for Claw Isle at once. The account thus links the island not to a described landscape or military action, but to the political and fiscal consequences of its lord’s service at court: his departure marked the end of the tax regime that had provoked such resentment.
