Dun Fort

Fire & Blood

Dun Fort is the stronghold at Duskendale where Rhaenyra Targaryen took shelter while fleeing King’s Landing. Its walls offered temporary protection, but not security: her welcome depended on the intercession of a distant kinsman of House Darklyn, and her attempt to reach Dragonstone stalled when the promised ship never came.

Setting and political context

Dun Fort stands above Duskendale’s harbor. By the time Rhaenyra reached it, the town had already suffered for its support of her cause. House Darklyn had been among her strongest adherents, but Lord Gunthor and his uncle Steffon had both died in her service, while Ser Criston Cole had sacked Duskendale. The loyalty that once linked the town to Rhaenyra had therefore brought loss into the household that now had to decide whether to admit her.

A conditional refuge

Lord Gunthor’s widow, Lady Meredyth, was reluctant to receive Rhaenyra. Ser Harrold Darke persuaded her to open the gates: he was distant kin to the Darklyns and had served as a squire to the late Ser Steffon. Even with his intervention, the welcome came with a limit. Lady Meredyth allowed Rhaenyra inside only on the condition that she would not stay long. Dun Fort was shelter, but not an offer of lasting allegiance or sanctuary.

The failed passage home

Once inside the fort, overlooking the harbor, Rhaenyra ordered Lady Meredyth’s maester to send word to Grand Maester Gerardys on Dragonstone and request a ship to take her home at once. The town chronicles report that three ravens were sent. Days passed without a ship or a reply, leaving Rhaenyra furious and once again doubtful of Gerardys’s loyalty. Dun Fort thus became the setting for a further narrowing of her options: although she had reached a walled refuge, the harbor brought no rescue, and her return to Dragonstone remained out of reach.
