Ghost Hill

Fire & Blood

Ghost Hill was a Dornish castle caught in the pattern of conquest, withdrawal, and renewed resistance that defined the Targaryen campaign in Dorne. Its changing control made it one of the eastern strongholds where royal occupation failed to secure lasting submission.

The Conqueror’s Campaign

During the Conqueror’s advance through Dorne, Lord Toland of Ghost Hill sent a champion to challenge the king to single combat. The Conqueror accepted and killed the challenger, only to learn afterward that the man had been Lord Toland’s fool. Toland himself had already gone, leaving the king without the victory over Dorne’s lord that the encounter seemed to promise.

Recapture by the Dornish

After the royal host withdrew, Dornish forces rose against the garrisons left behind. Ghost Hill was among the castles recaptured within a fortnight, and its royal garrison was put to the sword. Its swift recovery shows how little the Conqueror’s declaration of rule and appointment of royal officers had settled control on the ground: the Dornish could wait for the invaders to leave, then reclaim their strongholds.

A Target in the Continuing War

Ghost Hill was later among the places struck from the air by Vhagar. In the same campaign, the dragon’s fires fell on Sunspear, Lemonwood, and the Tor as well. The renewed attack did not erase the earlier pattern of resistance; it placed Ghost Hill within a wider exchange of reprisals in which castles and settlements repeatedly became targets, while neither occupation nor destruction established a lasting peace.
