Harlan Tyrell

Fire & Blood

Harlan Tyrell was the steward who surrendered Highgarden to Aegon Targaryen without a fight and was rewarded with the seat, lands, and authority of the fallen House Gardener. As Warden of the South, he then led a royal campaign into Dorne, where heat, poisoned water, and attacks on his forces undermined the conquest. After setting out from Hellholt to retake ground lost to the Dornish, Harlan and his entire army disappeared; none was seen again.

Steward of Highgarden

When Aegon reached Highgarden, the castle was held by Harlan, whose forebears had served the Gardeners for centuries. Harlan yielded its keys and pledged his support to the conquering king. Aegon granted him Highgarden and all its domains, naming him Warden of the South and Lord Paramount of the Mander, with dominion over the former vassals of House Gardener. The grant transformed a steward of the old ruling house into the head of its successor, binding his rise directly to the submission of the Reach.

The campaign in Dorne

During the First Dornish War, Harlan was among the commanders who advanced into Dorne with Aegon’s forces. The scale of the host encouraged confidence: Harlan was reported to have said that it was strong enough to crush any Dornish army that stood against it, even without Aegon and Balerion. But the Dornish avoided a pitched battle, retreating while burning crops and poisoning wells. Their abandoned watchtowers and the barrier of rotting sheep carcasses in the mountain passes further delayed and weakened the invaders.

After the army emerged from the Prince’s Pass, Aegon divided his forces. Harlan marched south against Uthor Uller, Lord of Hellholt, while Aegon turned east toward Skyreach. The campaign’s hardships were not chiefly a test of battlefield strength: in the unrelenting desert heat, the waterholes and oases along Harlan’s route had been poisoned. His men and horses died as they advanced. By the time he reached Hellholt, Harlan had lost a quarter of his men and almost all his horses, and found the castle abandoned.

Isolation and disappearance

Aegon left Harlan and his remaining host at Hellholt, a strong castle on the river Brimstone that was thought well placed to contain revolt. Its position did not make it a secure base. The river’s sulfurous water made the fish taken from it sicken the Highgardeners, while spearmen of House Qorgyle to the west and the Vaiths to the east attacked foraging parties and patrols that ventured too far from the castle.

After news arrived that Sunspear had been retaken and Lord Rosby killed, Harlan gathered his remaining strength and set out across the sands. His announced plan was to capture Vaith, march east along the river, retake Sunspear and the shadow city, and punish those responsible for Rosby’s death. Somewhere east of Hellholt, amid the red sands, Harlan and his entire army disappeared. The account gives no explanation for their fate, and no man of the host was ever seen again.

Significance

Harlan’s career turns on the contrast between the authority Aegon bestowed and the power that could actually be maintained. His peaceful surrender of Highgarden brought him an immense grant and leadership over the Reach’s former vassals; in Dorne, however, titles and numbers could not secure supply lines or compel an enemy to fight on the invaders’ terms. The loss of most of his horses and a quarter of his men left him exposed at Hellholt, and the disappearance of his host ended his recorded role in the war without a confirmed account of what happened.
