Hill of Visenya
Fire & BloodHill of Visenya was the center of Gaemon Palehair’s improvised kingdom during the upheaval in King’s Landing. Its court, its decrees, and its eventual defeat made the hill a stage on which the city’s unstable claims to authority briefly took shape.
A Seat of Makeshift Rule
During the disorder, an army of whores on Hill of Visenya offered their favors to men willing to swear their swords to Gaemon, a four-year-old bastard called “King Cunny” in the city’s vulgar parlance. His court gathered at the House of Kisses on the hill, far from the structures of ordinary royal government. Whores, mummers, and thieves surrounded the child, while ruffians, sellswords, and drunkards supplied the force behind his rule.
The location gave Gaemon’s faction a visible foothold in a city where royal authority had fractured. Decrees issued from the House of Kisses as a rival center of power, while Ser Perkin the Flea’s separate faction held ground around Aegon’s High Hill. Hill of Visenya was thus not simply a refuge for a crowd: it became the seat of a competing, if precarious, political order.
Decrees from the House of Kisses
The policies proclaimed in Gaemon’s name addressed inequality and hardship. Girls were declared equal to boys in inheritance; during famine, the poor were promised bread and beer; and men disabled in war were to be fed and housed by the lord whose side they had served. Another decree prescribed punishment for husbands who beat their wives, regardless of what the wives had done to warrant chastisement.
The account attributes these measures not to the child king himself but, with uncertainty, to Sylvenna Sand, a Dornish woman reputed to be the paramour of Gaemon’s mother, Essie. The contrast between the court’s marginal, improvised setting and its far-reaching promises made the hill a platform for grievances absent from the competing royal decrees elsewhere in the city.
The Hill’s Capture
Borros Baratheon moved against Hill of Visenya after arriving in a city whose walls and streets had been left in disorder. Seasoned by border clashes with the Dornish and a recent campaign against another Vulture King, he led armored columns up the hill from three directions. They routed the street scum, sellswords, and drunkards gathered around Gaemon and took the young king alive.
Gaemon had celebrated his fifth nameday only two days earlier. Captured, chained, and weeping, he was carried back to the Red Keep over the back of a horse. Essie followed, holding Sylvenna Sand’s hand, with the surviving members of the Palehair court trailing behind. The fall of Hill of Visenya ended Gaemon’s brief rule and brought its makeshift court under the victors’ control.
