House Bracken
Fire & BloodHouse Bracken is a Riverlands house whose long-standing enmity with House Blackwood shaped both an earlier attempt at reconciliation and the violence of the Dance of the Dragons. During the war, House Bracken fought for King Aegon; its defeat and the capture of its seat, Stone Hedge, helped bring the Riverlands’ remaining support for him to an end.
Identity and Earlier Reconciliation
House Bracken’s history with House Blackwood is described as centuries of hostility. In an effort to make peace between the rival houses, Queen Visenya arranged a double wedding: a son of each house was matched with a daughter of the other. The reciprocal marriages were meant to seal a peace, turning a feud between neighboring families into a bond of kinship.
Allegiance in the Dance of the Dragons
That settlement did not prevent the houses from taking opposite sides in the later civil war. Lord Samwell Blackwood raised Rhaenyra’s banners over Raventree, while Ser Amos Bracken followed his father when House Bracken declared for King Aegon. The family rivalry thus became part of the wider conflict over the throne, with the two houses aligned against each other once again.
Battle of the Burning Mill
After raiders from Raventree crossed into Bracken lands, burning crops, taking livestock, and sacking villages and septs, House Bracken gathered a force to retaliate. Lord Samwell surprised the Bracken host as it camped beneath a riverside mill. The mill was set alight, and the fighting continued for hours. Ser Amos, leading the force from Stone Hedge, killed Lord Samwell in single combat, but then died when an arrow passed through his helmet’s eye slit. The account attributes the shot to Samwell’s sixteen-year-old sister, Alysanne Blackwood, while acknowledging that this may be family legend rather than certain fact.
Defeat and Consequences
The Brackens suffered further losses before their forces broke and fled toward their own lands under Ser Raylon Rivers, Amos’s bastard half-brother. Their retreat left Stone Hedge exposed: Prince Daemon led Darrys, Rootes, Pipers, and Freys in a storming of the castle while much of House Bracken’s strength was away. Lord Humfrey Bracken, his remaining children, his third wife, and his paramour were taken captive. To prevent harm to them, Raylon yielded. With House Bracken broken and defeated, the last of King Aegon’s supporters in the Riverlands lost heart and laid down their swords. The reversal of the earlier marriage-made peace underscores how little that alliance could restrain the feud once war divided the houses again.
