Jaehaerys’s Crown

Fire & Blood

Jaehaerys’s Crown was a royal heirloom whose passage from Jaehaerys Targaryen to Viserys Targaryen linked their reigns. When Ser Steffon Darklyn carried it from King’s Landing to Dragonstone, it became the crown used to proclaim Rhaenyra Targaryen queen, giving the object a new and contested political significance.

Identity and Appearance

The crown was a band of yellow gold ornamented with seven gems of different colors. Viserys had worn it, and Jaehaerys before him. Its history therefore tied the late king and his predecessor to a single visible emblem of royal authority.

It was distinct from Aegon the Conqueror’s Crown, the iron-and-ruby crown chosen by Aegon II for his own coronation. The contrast between the two objects made the rival claims materially visible: one crown belonged to the succession represented by the recent kings, while the other invoked the Conqueror.

From Royal Heirloom to Stolen Crown

After Viserys’s death, Queen Alicent ordered his crown locked away when Aegon II chose to wear Aegon the Conqueror’s Crown. The steward entrusted with securing it instead made off with it. Ser Steffon Darklyn, then of the Kingsguard, escaped the city by night with his squire, two stewards, and four guardsmen; they left through a postern gate and used a fisherman’s skiff to reach Dragonstone, bringing the crown with them.

The theft marked an early defection from Aegon II’s side. The crown’s arrival on Dragonstone was welcomed by Rhaenyra’s supporters, who regarded Steffon and the other loyalists as having delivered the Old King’s crown. Its recovery did not settle the conflict, but made the object available for a rival royal ceremony.

Rhaenyra’s Coronation

The day after the stolen crown reached Dragonstone, Daemon Targaryen placed it on his wife’s head before three hundred witnesses and proclaimed her queen. Rhaenyra named her eldest son, Jacaerys, Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne. In that ceremony, the crown passed from the regalia of Viserys and Jaehaerys into the public presentation of Rhaenyra’s claim.

The coronation gave the heirloom a role beyond remembrance. Rather than merely preserving the succession of earlier kings, it was used to support a new sovereign’s assertion of authority. The choice of crown also contrasted with Aegon II’s coronation in King’s Landing, where he had been crowned with the Conqueror’s iron-and-ruby crown.

Political Significance and Legacy

The crown’s importance rested on its history and its use in ceremony, not on any stated power of its own. Worn by Jaehaerys and Viserys, it carried associations with their rule; placed on Rhaenyra, it helped make her claim visible to those assembled on Dragonstone. Its theft, transport, and ceremonial use show how royal objects could become part of the struggle over who inherited the Iron Throne.

The account records no later fate for Jaehaerys’s Crown. Its last specified appearance is at Rhaenyra’s coronation, where an heirloom associated with two previous kings became the emblem of her own accession.
