Jonquil Darke
Fire & BloodJonquil Darke’s story turns on a striking change of role: the woman unmasked as the Scarlet tournament mystery knight became the queen’s sworn shield. First celebrated by crowds for her skill and daring, she was later summoned to court because Queen Alysanne needed a protector who could accompany her where the king’s male guards could not. As the Scarlet Shadow, Jonquil became a close and visible part of the queen’s household, entrusted with her safety on journeys and present at the public events that marked Alysanne’s rule.
Identity and Introduction
Jonquil was a bastard daughter of the Lord of Duskendale. During the War for the White Cloaks, she competed under the identity of the Serpent in Scarlet, a slender mystery knight who attracted a substantial following. When the defeated competitor was unmasked, the crowd discovered that the knight was a woman. Jonquil therefore entered the story first as a surprise: not through a family office or a place in the royal household, but through a public contest whose audience had watched her compete without knowing who she was.
The tournament did not give her a white cloak. The champions selected for the Kingsguard were other men, and the competition ended without Jonquil joining their ranks. Her significance instead emerged later, when the queen’s own need for protection made her abilities useful in a different way. Her red clothing connected the two parts of her career: she appeared at court still dressed in scarlet when she answered the king’s summons.
From Mystery Knight to Sworn Shield
The immediate cause of Jonquil’s appointment was the attempted attack on Alysanne at Maidenpool. The queen’s companions, the Wise Women, had placed themselves between her and the attackers, while the Kingsguard had been guarding the bathhouse entrance and did not anticipate that danger would come from within. The incident showed Alysanne that even loyal and brave male protectors could not accompany her everywhere. She asked for a protector of her own, someone able to go to places where men could not.
Jaehaerys responded that same night by sending a raven to Duskendale, ordering the new Lord Darklyn to send his bastard half-sister to court. Jonquil arrived in King’s Landing a few days later and gladly accepted appointment as the queen’s own sworn shield. The sequence gives her change in status a clear practical basis: the queen had experienced a vulnerability in the existing arrangements, and Jonquil’s presence addressed it. In time, she became known throughout the realm as the Scarlet Shadow, a name that joined her scarlet appearance to the closeness with which she guarded Alysanne.
Service on the Royal Journey
Jonquil accompanied the royal couple when they flew from King’s Landing to Oldtown. The council had urged Jaehaerys and Alysanne to take protection, and the king arranged for the two sworn protectors to travel with them: Ser Joffrey Doggett flew with Alysanne, while Jonquil rode with Jaehaerys. The arrangement balanced the weight carried by each dragon. Their route included overnight stops at Bitterbridge and Highgarden, where the king and queen rested and took counsel with their lords before continuing.
The journey placed Jonquil within the queen’s protective circle during a politically charged visit. The royal arrival at Oldtown had not been announced beforehand; thousands came out to see the dragons, and the city’s uncertainty over the unexpected visit was especially keen among its septons. Jonquil’s role is recorded through the practical detail of the flight rather than through a speech or independent political action. She travelled as part of the security the council had insisted upon, accompanying the royal party as it entered a city where the king’s reception mattered.
Public Appearances and Narrative Role
Jonquil’s service did not erase her connection to the tournament world in which she had first become famous. At a later grand melee held in the Dragonpit, Alysanne forbade both Jonquil and Tom the Strummer, another favorite of the smallfolk, from taking part. The exclusion distinguishes Jonquil’s position as the queen’s protector from her earlier public identity as a competitor: the queen’s concern for her companions overrode the spectacle that had once made them crowd favorites.
At White Harbor, Jonquil again appeared before a crowd in a martial display, this time at Alysanne’s invitation. Lord Manderly had arranged a small tourney for the queen, and one participant was a wildling girl who had been captured by rangers north of the Wall and fostered by a knight in Manderly’s household. Delighted by the girl’s daring, Alysanne summoned Jonquil. The two fought a friendly exhibition with spear against sword as the northmen cheered. Jonquil’s appearance thus joined her protective office to the skill that had first made her notable, while allowing the queen’s court to stage a public encounter between her sworn shield and an unconventional northern challenger. Across these episodes, Jonquil is defined less by a narrated private life than by the roles others recognize in her: the mystery knight who unsettled expectations, the sworn shield summoned after a security failure, and the Scarlet Shadow who guarded the queen and could still take the field when called upon.
