Lady Baela

Fire & Blood

Lady Baela was a Braavosi war galley captured by Alyn Velaryon in the Stepstones and renamed for his young wife, Baela Targaryen. The vessel became one of the ships used on Alyn’s voyages and, on a later return to King’s Landing, carried the unexpected news that his brother Viserys was alive.

Capture and Renaming

Alyn captured the galley in the Stepstones and gave it the name Lady Baela. It was a substantial vessel, propelled by two hundred oars, and its new name commemorated his wife. The ship’s name thus linked a prize of war to Alyn’s family life, while distinguishing it among the six different ships he would command on six voyages around Westeros.

Voyage and Parley at Bloodstone

On his voyage round Dorne to Lannisport, Alyn sailed Lady Baela. In 133 AC, he detached it from the fleet and took it beneath a parley flag into Bloodstone, where he sought free passage for his ships through the waters controlled by Racallio Ryndoon. Alyn chose negotiation rather than battle because he feared that defeating Racallio would cost half his strength, which he needed for the coming contest with the Red Kraken. The galley therefore carried him into a precarious diplomatic encounter: Racallio kept him at his wooden fortress for more than a fortnight, treating him by turns as a friend and a possible enemy. Alyn ultimately secured passage.

Return with Viserys

Lady Baela later returned from Lys carrying Alyn’s most consequential passenger: Viserys Targaryen, the king’s younger brother, who had been presumed dead for nearly five years. When Alyn arrived in King’s Landing, Viserys emerged from the ship with a richly dressed young woman. The galley had begun its recorded career as a captured warship and a namesake tribute to Alyn’s wife; on this return, it became the vessel that delivered the king’s lost brother home. Its role in Viserys’s recovery gives the ship a significance beyond its place in Alyn’s fleet, joining his maritime exploits to the restoration of the royal family.
