Lord Flea Bottom
Fire & BloodLord Flea Bottom is Otto Hightower’s threatening epithet for Daemon Targaryen, a name that turns Otto’s fear of Rhaenyra’s claim into a warning about who might wield power if she became queen. The accusation presents Daemon as a prospective ruler behind the throne; later, his counsel to Rhaenyra’s Black council complicates that image by showing him urge restraint and a political campaign before battle.
The Epithet and Its Accusation
During the Green council’s discussion of the succession, Otto argued that Rhaenyra’s husband was Daemon and portrayed him as cruel and unforgiving. He predicted that if Rhaenyra sat the Iron Throne, Lord Flea Bottom would rule as her king consort. Otto framed the prospect as a threat to the Greens personally: he expected his own execution first and warned that Alicent Hightower would follow.
The epithet makes Otto’s case more than an argument about competing claims. It recasts Rhaenyra’s potential reign as a danger of Daemon’s domination, using his supposed character to support the Greens’ rejection of her succession. This is Otto’s political characterization, not a neutral account of Daemon’s rule.
The Black Council and a Counterpoint
At the Black council, Daemon agreed with Rhaenyra that their dragons should not be risked in battle unless there were no other choices. He proposed that she hold her own coronation in answer to Aegon’s, then send ravens to call on the lords of the Seven Kingdoms to declare for her. His approach placed persuasion and the allegiance of the great houses before direct military use of dragons.
That counsel provides a pointed contrast with Otto’s epithet. The Green Hand depicts Daemon as a cruel power behind a queen; in the Black council account, Daemon argues for a strategy centered on political allegiance and avoiding needless dragon combat. The expression thus reveals the Greens’ fear of Daemon’s influence, while the surrounding events leave his actual conduct more complex than Otto’s warning suggests.
