Maester Gerardys
Fire & BloodMaester Gerardys was Rhaenyra Targaryen’s long-serving maester on Dragonstone and, during the struggle over the Iron Throne, her candidate to replace Grand Maester Mellos. His healing skills had been credited with saving King Viserys after the king injured his hand on the Iron Throne. When Rhaenyra later bestowed the office on Gerardys in defiance of the Citadel’s choice, the appointment became a visible test of who possessed authority over the institutions of the realm.
Service to Rhaenyra and the royal court
Gerardys had served Rhaenyra on Dragonstone long before the succession crisis reached its decisive stage. His medical work brought him into the royal dispute after Viserys injured his hand on the Iron Throne: Rhaenyra argued that Gerardys’s healing had saved the king’s life. Alicent Hightower disputed that account, maintaining that Rhaenyra and her maester had intervened unnecessarily and that Grand Maester Mellos might otherwise have saved the king’s fingers as well.
The disagreement over Mellos’s successor exposed the limits of the Crown’s control over the office. Viserys chose neither candidate, reminding Rhaenyra and Alicent that the Citadel of Oldtown, not the Crown, selected the Grand Maester. The Conclave subsequently appointed Archmaester Orwyle, rather than Gerardys or Alicent’s preferred candidate, Maester Alfador.
Rhaenyra’s appointment of Gerardys
After Rhaenyra was crowned on Dragonstone, Orwyle arrived among the envoys sent from King’s Landing. Rhaenyra questioned him about her father’s named heir; when Orwyle acknowledged that Viserys had named her, she challenged his service to her half-brother. She then ordered her knights to remove Orwyle’s chain of office and gave it to Gerardys, whom she presented as a faithful servant of the realm and its laws. Orwyle’s protest did not prevent the transfer.
The episode turned Gerardys’s advancement into more than a personal reward. Viserys had expressly recognized the Citadel’s right to choose the Grand Maester, but Rhaenyra replaced its appointee by royal command. Her action asserted that her claim to lawful rule entitled her to decide who served the realm in that office. The chain itself, transferred from Orwyle to Gerardys, made the institutional contest public and tangible.
The office under Rhaenyra’s rule
After Rhaenyra took King’s Landing, Gerardys’s position was reinforced. She wrote to the Citadel declaring him the only true Grand Maester, while Orwyle was sent to the dungeons. The appointment that had begun on Dragonstone thus became part of the new queen’s effort to reward her adherents and displace those associated with her half-brother’s government.
The surviving account presents Gerardys chiefly through his service and appointment: as a healer whose work Rhaenyra cited, a long-standing member of her household, and the beneficiary of her contested claim to the Grand Maester’s chain. It records no independent political program for him. His significance lies instead in how Rhaenyra’s choice joined a practical claim about the king’s care to a larger assertion of royal authority over the realm’s institutions.
