Rodrik Greyjoy

Fire & Blood

Rodrik Greyjoy was Toron Greyjoy’s half-brother and one of the rival claimants in the succession struggle that followed the death of the Red Kraken. Raised by supporters opposed to the faction controlling Toron, Rodrik’s claim drew him into a three-sided conflict and ended with his capture by Lannister forces. His fate shows how the contest for the Seastone Chair extended beyond competing claims to become a campaign of vengeance and personal punishment.

Claim and Support

After the Red Kraken died, his three sisters and their husbands seized the boy Toron Greyjoy and put Toron’s mother to death. Rodrik’s cousins joined with the lords of Harlaw and Blacktyde to raise him up as an alternative claimant. At the same time, the men of Great Wyk rallied around Sam Salt, who claimed descent from the black line. Rodrik thus became the candidate of one of three factions, though the account does not attribute to him any specific actions or explain his own aims.

The Lannister Campaign

The three-way struggle had lasted half a year when Ser Leo Costayne brought a Lannister fleet to the Iron Islands, landing thousands of soldiers on Pyke, Great Wyk, and Harlaw. Lord Oakenfist had refused to join House Lannister’s vengeance against the ironborn, but Lady Johanna Lannister persuaded him to assist, reportedly promising to marry him if he delivered the islands to her son’s rule. The expedition failed to secure that outcome: Ser Leo died on Great Wyk, and three-quarters of his ships were seized or sunk. At Pyke, Toron’s defenders beat off the assault on the walls, and Toron remained on the Seastone Chair.

Capture and Aftermath

Rodrik did not share Toron’s survival at Pyke. He was taken and brought back to Casterly Rock, where Lady Johanna had him castrated and made him her son’s fool. The contrast between the two half-brothers’ outcomes is stark: Toron retained the chair, while Rodrik, despite having been raised as a rival, ended in the hands of the force that had come to impose Lannister rule.

Role in the Succession Struggle

Rodrik’s place in the account is defined by the competing powers that raised, opposed, and ultimately captured him. His brief appearance links the Ironborn succession crisis to the Lannisters’ retaliation for the ironborn devastation of the Westerlands. The account records neither how Rodrik came to be chosen by his supporters nor what became of him after Lady Johanna’s punishment, leaving his story at the point where a political claim has been transformed into personal subjugation.
