Rosroad

Fire & Blood

Rosroad was one of the major roads Jaehaerys Targaryen transformed during his reign, improving an older route as part of a wider effort to connect the kingdoms by land. Its reconstruction belonged to a project that treated roads not merely as tracks for travel but as lasting infrastructure for a more closely joined realm.

Place in the road network

Rosroad is named among the roads Jaehaerys’s workers improved alongside the Ocean Road, River Road, and Goldroad. Some of these routes had existed for centuries in rougher forms; others were made anew. The account identifies Rosroad as part of this larger network but does not specify its endpoints or describe its course.

Reconstruction under Jaehaerys

The work went beyond maintaining the existing tracks. Jaehaerys’s crews filled ruts, spread gravel, and built bridges over streams, remaking the old roads beyond recognition. The program was costly, but the kingdom was prosperous, and Martyn Tyrell, the new master of coin, helped manage the expenditure with the assistance of his wife, known as the apple counter. The improvements continued mile by mile and league by league for decades.

Significance

Rosroad’s rebuilding formed one part of Jaehaerys’s attempt to overcome the poor connections that had accompanied the rapid growth of King’s Landing and the realm. By improving established routes as well as creating new ones, the king made movement across Westeros more practical and helped strengthen the ties between its regions. The Old King’s monument at the Citadel of Oldtown summarized that wider achievement: “He bound the land together, and made of seven kingdoms, one.”
