Sable Hall

Fire & Blood

Sable Hall was a crumbling fort on the Wall that became one of the strongholds in a 50 AC rebellion by former members of the Faith Militant who had joined the Night’s Watch. Its brief place in the revolt links the Watch’s effort to reclaim neglected castles with the lethal consequences of the rebels’ flight beyond the Wall.

Setting and Condition

Sable Hall was one of two decaying forts assigned to Ser Olyver Bracken and Ser Raymund Mallery, former knights who had served in Maegor’s Kingsguard before abandoning him for Jaehaerys. The Lord Commander gave them command of the castles with instructions to restore them. Instead, they attempted to make the forts their own seats and establish themselves as lords.

The Rebellion and Flight

The uprising broke out in 50 AC among former Poor Fellows and Warrior’s Sons who had received clemency from the boy king and taken the black. The revolt was quickly defeated at Rimegate: for every man of the Night’s Watch who joined the rebels, ten remained true to their vows. After Lord Walton Stark and his bannermen helped retake Rimegate, the rebels at Sable Hall fled beyond the Wall, hoping to make common cause with the wildlings.

Aftermath and Significance

Walton pursued the fugitives north. Two days beyond the Wall, in the Haunted Forest, giants attacked his party; Walton was killed, and his surviving men carried him back to Castle Black. The rebels found no welcome among the free folk: Raymund Mallery’s head was delivered to Eastwatch half a year later. Sable Hall’s brief role in the revolt therefore belongs to a wider reversal: an attempt to turn neglected Watch forts into private lordships ended not in a lasting settlement, but in flight and a costly pursuit.
