Simon Dondarrion
Fire & BloodSimon Dondarrion of Blackhaven joins courtly distinction to martial service: a gifted musician and jouster whose presence delighted the royal couple, he later led marcher knights into the mountains to help contain the Vulture King. His appearances trace a movement from favored young host to lord and military ally, though the account leaves the details of his life beyond those episodes unstated.
Identity and Talents
At Blackhaven, Simon was Lord Dondarrion’s son and an accomplished performer and jouster. He played the high harp as skillfully as he jousted, entertaining King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne with sad songs about star-crossed lovers and fallen kings. The queen was so taken with him that the royal party stayed at Blackhaven longer than planned.
His combination of musical and martial talents recurs in the account of the royal tourney. There he is identified as Ser Simon Dondarrion of Blackhaven: gallant and handsome, and strong enough with the lance to win the championship. The later account names him Lord of Blackhaven, establishing his position at the head of the marcher house without explaining when or how he succeeded to it.
The Tourney and Royal Favor
At the midyear tourney celebrating the Dragonpit’s completion, Simon won the champion’s laurels in the jousting. His victory brought him acclaim beyond the lists: when he crowned Princess Daenerys as queen of love and beauty, he won the love of the commons and Queen Alysanne alike. The episode presents his favor as public and royal at once, linking his prowess in the tournament to a ceremonial role before the crowd.
That acclaim echoes the earlier reception at Blackhaven. The queen’s pleasure in Simon’s company had already prolonged the royal visit; at the tourney, his success and the crowning of Daenerys made him a conspicuous favorite before the realm. The account does not describe a personal relationship beyond this admiration and favor.
Service in the Mountains
During the conflict known as Lord Rogar’s War, Simon appears not as a courtly host but as Lord of Blackhaven and commander of marcher knights. He led a small force into the mountains from the west, with the aim of sealing that side against the Vulture King’s escape. Lord Rogar’s stormlanders advanced from the east while Jaehaerys searched from the air on Vermithor, coordinating the converging pursuit.
The mountain campaign was dangerous: Rogar’s men had to abandon their horses and continue on foot along steep tracks and through caves, while hidden opponents rolled stones down at them. Simon’s force formed the western arm of the operation, helping to close the space around the fugitives as the hunters approached one another. The account gives no further detail about his own fighting or what he did after the Vulture King was found.
Narrative Role
Simon’s brief appearances connect two kinds of influence. At Blackhaven and at the tourney, music, skill, and ceremony make him a favorite of the queen and the commons; in the mountains, his lordship takes practical form in command of the marcher knights. His role in the pursuit is specific but bounded: he helps block escape from the west as Jaehaerys directs the search from above, while Lord Rogar’s force advances from the east. Together, these episodes establish Simon as both a figure of courtly appeal and a participant in the king’s military effort.
