Skyreach
Fire & BloodSkyreach was a mountain stronghold of Lord Fowler that Aegon Targaryen took by storm during the First Dornish War. Its capture was one of the Conqueror’s successes in Dorne, but the castle changed hands again within a fortnight of his withdrawal, exposing the fragility of the occupation.
Setting and Campaign
Aegon’s forces entered Dorne by separate routes. While Lord Harlan Tyrell marched south toward Hellholt, Aegon turned east to besiege Skyreach. The campaign’s conditions differed sharply across the region: Tyrell’s men suffered from heat and poisoned water sources in the sands, whereas Aegon advanced through foothills where runoff supplied water and the valleys offered plentiful game. The contrast helps explain why the king’s eastern campaign could make progress while Tyrell’s force was badly depleted.
Capture by Aegon
Aegon took Skyreach by storm. The account gives no details of the assault or its duration, but records the castle’s capture alongside his acquisition of Yronwood after a brief siege. This success formed part of a wider advance in which the Lord of the Tor’s steward surrendered without fighting and Lord Toland of Ghost Hill avoided the king. The victories gave the invasion a foothold, but did not bring the Dornish lords into the open or secure lasting control of their lands.
Recapture and Significance
After Aegon and his host left Dorne, Dornish forces reappeared and recaptured Skyreach within a fortnight, killing its royal garrison. Its rapid recovery, together with the loss of other occupied castles, turned Aegon’s earlier conquest into a temporary occupation rather than a durable settlement. Skyreach’s brief passage from Lord Fowler’s control to the crown and back again encapsulates the central difficulty of the campaign: taking strongholds did not mean the invaders could hold them once the king’s army had gone.
