Sothoryos
Fire & BloodSothoryos appears both as a known, dangerous coast and as part of a much larger world that remained beyond Westerosi knowledge. Eustace Hightower’s account places it at the end of a misjudged voyage, while Elissa Farman imagined that still more lands might lie beyond the seas, including another Sothoryos.## Place Beyond the Known World In Elissa Farman’s vision of the world, Sothoryos was not the final limit of discovery. She believed that unknown lands and seas lay between Westeros and the far eastern shores of Essos and Ulthos, and imagined another Sothoryos among them. The continent thus figures in her challenge to the maesters’ assumptions about the world’s size: even a place known by name could stand for the possibility of further, unseen continents.## Eustace Hightower’s Landfall Sothoryos became a place of refuge, though an involuntary one, for Eustace Hightower and the crew of Lady Meredith. After storms and a dangerous encounter with leviathans damaged the ship, Eustace changed course for what he believed would be the nearest land, the Summer Islands. The voyagers were farther south than he had realized and missed them, reaching the coast of Sothoryos instead. Repairs proved more difficult than expected, and the company remained there for a full year while trying to make Lady Meredith seaworthy again.## Resources and Hazards Eustace’s account presents Sothoryos as rich in valuable materials, including emeralds, gold, and spices, but those potential riches did not make it safe for the stranded crew. He described unfamiliar and dangerous wildlife, and reported that some of his men disappeared while others died. Illness and fevers repeatedly left much of the crew unable to work; even freshwater, which might ordinarily have offered relief, was unsafe because it contained tiny worms. The account makes the contrast stark: the land offered wealth, but survival and the repair of the ship remained the immediate concerns.## Rescue and Narrative Significance The crew might, Eustace believed, have perished without the arrival of Summer Islanders, who helped them bring Lady Meredith to Tall Trees Town. From there, the ship and its remaining company could return home. Sothoryos is therefore associated with both the limits of a Westerosi expedition and the aid that made its return possible. Elissa Farman’s fate forms a contrasting, unresolved thread: her Sun Chaser continued west in search of lands beyond the Sunset Sea and was never seen again.
