The Disputed Lands
Fire & BloodThe Disputed Lands were a contested territory whose control shifted amid the rivalries of Lys, Tyrosh, and Myr. During the Daughters’ War, fighting and changing alliances made the region a place where political fortunes could turn abruptly; after the war, the three cities divided it among themselves, while Dornish power expanded over most of the Stepstones.
A contested region in a wider war
The Daughters’ War grew from tensions between the Free Cities. After the murder of Sharako Lohar, Lys and Myr went to war, while Tyrosh used the opening to press its claim to the Stepstones. The conflict was not confined to the Disputed Lands, but the region belonged to the same shifting field of rivalry, in which military reversals and alliances repeatedly altered who could exert power.
At one point, Lys and Myr made peace and attacked Tyrosh together. The Tyroshi Archon recalled his forces from the Stepstones, while Pentoshi sellswords held the islands not controlled by Racallio Ryndoon’s followers, and Braavosi warships controlled the intervening waters. This episode illustrates the wider instability of the conflict, though the account distinguishes the Stepstones from the Disputed Lands themselves.
Bambarro Bazanne’s death
The region also enters the story through the fate of Bambarro Bazanne. In 132 AC, while leading a sellsword company against Tyrosh in the Disputed Lands, he was killed when his own men turned against him over unpaid wages. The company’s mutiny joined military conflict to the practical demands of keeping mercenaries paid: Bambarro’s command ended not through a recorded battlefield defeat, but through a breakdown of loyalty within his force.
Bambarro’s death had consequences far beyond the campaign. He had left enormous debts, so his creditors seized his manse. His wife and children were sold into slavery, while his possessions—including Prince Viserys Targaryen, whom Bambarro had held captive—passed to Lysandro Rogare. The Disputed Lands thus become the point of departure for a political and personal chain of events that carried the captive prince into the hands of a powerful Lysene family.
The settlement and its aftermath
The Daughters’ War eventually ended with Racallio Ryndoon fleeing south to the Basilisk Isles, Lys, Tyrosh, and Myr dividing the Disputed Lands, and the Dornish taking control of most of the Stepstones. The settlement redistributed power across the region: Myr suffered the greatest losses, while Tyrosh and the Princess of Dorne gained the most. In Lys, meanwhile, old houses fell and new political figures rose, among them Lysandro Rogare and his brother Drazenko Rogare.
The account presents the Disputed Lands as part of a conflict whose outcome extended well beyond the territory itself. The division among the three cities formalized one change in control, but the concurrent gains of the Dornish in the Stepstones and the rise of the Rogares in Lys show how the war’s consequences were distributed across several arenas. The region’s significance lies in that connection between contested land, mercenary warfare, and the wider reshaping of power.
