Toron Greyjoy
Fire & BloodToron Greyjoy was the eldest salt son of Dalton Greyjoy and the lawful heir to the Seastone Chair. Still under six when his father died, he inherited amid a succession crisis in which his youth and the status of his mother left him especially vulnerable: he remained on the chair after Pyke’s defenders beat off a Lannister assault, but the account does not say how his reign ultimately ended.
Inheritance and Vulnerability
Dalton had taken no rock wife. His heirs were therefore two young sons by salt wives, three sisters, and several ambitious cousins. By ironborn law, the Seastone Chair passed to the eldest salt son, Toron. But his mother, herself a salt wife, could not hope to serve as his regent in the way a rock wife might have. The distinction between lawful inheritance and effective power shaped the crisis from its beginning: Toron had the claim, but no secure adult authority to protect it.
Three Claims to Power
After Dalton’s death, the ironborn captains hurried home as his assembled fleet dissolved, anticipating the struggle that followed. Toron’s three aunts and their husbands seized him and put his mother to death. His cousins instead joined with the lords of Harlaw and Blacktyde to raise up his half-brother Rodrik. On Great Wyk, men rallied to Sam Salt, a pretender who claimed descent from the black line. These rival factions turned the succession into a three-sided fight, with the child king’s own relatives among those competing to control the islands.
The Lannister Assault on Pyke
The conflict had raged for half a year when Ser Leo Costayne brought a Lannister fleet against the Iron Islands, landing thousands of soldiers on Pyke, Great Wyk, and Harlaw. House Lannister’s intervention devastated the islands: longships, fishing boats, homes, and villages were burned, and the wives and children of ironborn raiders were killed wherever they were found. The assault also carried off grain and salt fish, leaving thousands more to die of starvation.
Toron’s defenders nevertheless beat off the assault on Pyke’s walls. He remained upon the Seastone Chair, while his half-brother Rodrik was captured and taken to Casterly Rock. Lady Johanna had Rodrik gelded and made him her son’s fool. The account establishes Toron’s survival and continued possession of the chair at this point, but gives no later outcome for his rule.
