Torrhen Manderly

Fire & Blood

Torrhen Manderly is a knight from White Harbor whose counsel and military service bring him into the final, unraveling days of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s rule in King’s Landing. As the city descends into disorder, he argues for caution, leads Northmen into dangerous streets, and tries to persuade the queen to seek refuge at White Harbor. She refuses, choosing instead to return to Dragonstone, and Torrhen remains aboard the ship carrying his men north.

Counsel in a Court of Suspicion

When members of Rhaenyra’s council questioned whether Ser Addam Velaryon and Nettles could be trusted, Torrhen urged the queen not to take chances. The defections of Ulf White and Hugh Hammer had made the possibility of further dragonriders joining the enemy especially alarming: if the queen lost two more dragons, her cause might be doomed. His advice aligned with the councilors who wanted the suspected dragonseeds seized, rather than with Corlys Velaryon and Grand Maester Gerardys, who defended them for lack of proof. Rhaenyra’s suspicions were aroused, though the account does not say that Torrhen’s counsel alone determined her response.

Fighting in King’s Landing

During the city’s unrest, Torrhen led his Northmen down the Hook toward Fishermonger’s Square and River Row, where Ser Perkin the Flea’s gutter knights held sway. At the River Gate, King Trystane’s banner flew above the battlements, and the bodies of the gate’s captain and three serjeants hung from the gatehouse; the rest of its garrison had joined Ser Perkin. Torrhen’s force fought its way back to the Red Keep, losing a quarter of its men in the retreat.

The losses marked the wider danger facing the queen’s remaining loyalists. Ser Lorent Marbrand led a hundred knights and men-at-arms into Flea Bottom, but only sixteen returned, and Lorent was among those lost. Torrhen survived the fighting and continued to serve Rhaenyra, but his force’s costly retreat showed how little of the capital remained secure.

The Offer of White Harbor

After Rhaenyra fled King’s Landing, Torrhen tried to persuade her to accompany him and his brother, Ser Medrick Manderly, back to White Harbor. Ser Harrold Darke separately urged her to seek shelter with Lady Arryn in the Vale. Rhaenyra rejected both proposals: she was determined to reach Dragonstone, where she believed she could find dragon eggs and obtain another dragon.

When she sailed for Dragonstone aboard the Braavosi merchantman Violande, the Manderlys stayed aboard, bound for White Harbor, while Rhaenyra and her party disembarked beneath the Dragonmont. The separation closes Torrhen’s part in the account: he had offered the queen a route to safety, but could not turn her from the destination she had chosen.
