Whispering Sound

Fire & Blood

Whispering Sound is the maritime passage linking Oldtown’s port with the open sea. It marks both the beginning of Elissa Farman’s westward expedition and the return of one of its ships nearly three years later, framing a voyage whose ambitions reached beyond the Sunset Sea but whose surviving evidence pointed instead to Sothoryos.

Setting and Maritime Role

The Sound serves as the route between Oldtown’s harbor and open water. On the expedition’s outward journey, the Sun Chaser sailed down Whispering Sound in company with the Autumn Moon and the Lady Meredith. The passage is presented as a practical threshold: the ships left the port behind and set out toward the open seas.

The Expedition’s Departure

The three ships departed Oldtown on the twenty-third day of the third moon of 56 AC. The Sun Chaser led the venture, accompanied by Ser Norman Hightower’s Autumn Moon and Ser Eustace Hightower’s Lady Meredith. Their passage through the Sound followed the recruitment of Eustace and Norman, whose decision to join and commit ships and crews helped turn Elissa Farman’s difficult search for sailors into a larger expedition.

The Lady Meredith’s Return

On the seventh day of the third moon of 59 AC, the battered Lady Meredith came limping up the Sound to Oldtown’s port. Its patched, salt-stained sails and faded paint made it hard to recognize; it was identified only after it had docked. Ser Eustace Hightower returned with a handful of Oldtown men, the remnants of his original crew. Most of those disembarking were dark-skinned Summer Islanders whom Eustace had hired in Sothoryos to replace lost sailors. The ship carried rich cargo, but it had not brought back goods from lands beyond the Sunset Sea: Eustace said that crossing had been a dream. The Sound thus appears at both ends of the voyage, first as the way out toward an uncertain horizon and later as the route home for a diminished crew and a more limited account of what they had reached.
