Yronwood
Fire & BloodYronwood was a Dornish stronghold captured during Aegon Targaryen’s first invasion of Dorne and retaken soon after his army departed. Its rapid change of hands marks the difference between the king’s claim to have conquered the region and the brief, unstable reach of his occupation.
Yronwood in the invasion
Aegon Targaryen entered Dorne through the Prince’s Pass with an army of thirty thousand, including nearly two thousand mounted knights and three hundred lords and bannermen; Orys Baratheon led a separate force of one thousand picked knights up the Boneway. After advancing through the foothills, Aegon took Skyreach by storm and won Yronwood after a brief siege. The account places Yronwood among the eastern strongholds reached during this campaign, but gives no further description of the castle or the siege itself.
Recapture and the end of the occupation
Aegon declared Dorne part of his realm at Sunspear and appointed royal officials to govern the lands he had taken. He then withdrew westward through the Prince’s Pass. Within a fortnight, Dornish forces had recaptured Yronwood, along with Skyreach, the Tor, and Ghost Hill; the royal garrisons were put to the sword. Yronwood’s capture had therefore secured only a temporary foothold, not lasting control.
Significance
Yronwood’s brief occupation is one measure of how quickly Aegon’s declared victory collapsed after the invading host left Dorne. The stronghold’s recapture formed part of a wider reversal that stripped the king’s forces of the castles they had seized, exposing the gap between claiming a territory and maintaining authority over it.
