Asshai-by-the-Shadow
Fire & BloodAsshai-by-the-Shadow is a bleak, remote city at the edge of the known world and the easternmost destination reached by Corlys Velaryon. Its harbor becomes the setting for an unresolved link between Corlys’s voyages and the disappearance of Elissa Farman’s ship, the Sun Chaser.
Setting and Reputation
Asshai lies so far east that Corlys’s journey there carried him beyond the Jade Gates and farther than any Westerosi had sailed before him. It is described as a bleak black city associated with shadowbinders, situated at the edge of the world. That image makes Asshai more than a far-off port: it marks the limit of Corlys’s known route and the threshold of what Westerosi accounts can claim to know.
Corlys’s Voyage
Corlys reached Asshai on his second voyage aboard the Sea Snake, after his first voyage had taken him through the Jade Gates to Yi Ti and the isle of Leng. The account says that he lost his love and half his crew during the Asshai voyage, though it qualifies these details as tales rather than established fact. His arrival nevertheless makes him the first Westerosi known to have reached the city.
The Sun Chaser in the Harbor
Years after Elissa Farman’s Sun Chaser vanished into the west, Corlys recalled seeing an old, much-weathered ship in Asshai’s harbor. He remained convinced that it could only have been the Sun Chaser. The sighting offers a possible connection between Elissa’s westward disappearance and Corlys’s later eastern voyage, but it does not establish how the ship reached Asshai or what became of its crew. The city’s significance rests partly in this uncertainty: at the farthest edge of the known world, the vanished ship is glimpsed again, but its fate remains unknown.
