Free Company

Fire & Blood

The Free Company appears in the account of Coryanne Wylde’s flight from Dragonstone through Pentos to the Disputed Lands. Its clearest connection to the story is Howard Bullock’s brief service with it: the company enters the record through an individual who joined its ranks, then through the later rumors associated with Coryanne’s travels.

Identity and Evidence

The Free Company is identified as a sellsword company operating in the Disputed Lands. The account gives no further information about its organization, leadership, size, or campaigns; its place in the narrative is established through Bullock’s enlistment and a later reference to its members hearing Coryanne’s tales.

Howard Bullock’s Service

After leaving Dragonstone with Coryanne, Bullock travelled with her by fishing boat to Driftmark and then by ship to Pentos. From there they made their way to the Disputed Lands, where he signed on with the Free Company. Three years later, he died in Myr after falling from his horse following a night of drinking. His death left Coryanne alone and penniless, and she moved on to further adventures.

Coryanne’s Tales and the Company’s Reputation

The Free Company appears again in the account of the rumors surrounding Coryanne’s flight. By the time news of her departure reached Rogar Baratheon, the story had spread beyond Dragonstone; the narrative suggests that Pentos’s magisters and the Free Company’s sellswords were entertained by the tales Coryanne had to tell. This is presented as an inference rather than a documented organizational action, but it extends the company’s role beyond Bullock’s enlistment: its members belong to the audience through whom Coryanne’s story circulates.
