Haunted Forest

Fire & Blood

The Haunted Forest is the setting of the decisive turn in Walton Stark’s pursuit of deserters from the Night’s Watch: two days beyond the Wall, in its snows, Giants attacked his party, killed Walton, and left his surviving men to carry his remains back in pieces. The forest marks the point where a rebellion against the Watch became a fatal encounter with a danger beyond the rebels’ control.

Setting and the Pursuit

After the rebels at Sable Hall fled beyond the Wall hoping to make common cause with the wildlings, Walton Stark pursued them. The account places the encounter two days north, amid the snows of the Haunted Forest. It gives no further description of the landscape; its defining details here are distance, winter conditions, and the sudden appearance of the Giants.

Walton Stark’s Death

The Giants set upon Walton and his men. Walton was said to have slain two before he was dragged from his saddle and torn apart. His surviving men carried him back to Castle Black in pieces, making the forest the site of both his death and the pursuit’s abrupt end.

Narrative Significance

The Haunted Forest shifts the episode from the Watch’s internal struggle to a lethal encounter beyond its boundary. Walton had ridden north to help suppress the rebellion, but the pursuit ended not with the capture of the deserters, who had escaped toward the wildlings, but with his death in the snow. That outcome later became central to the Stark family’s grievance against King Jaehaerys: Walton’s brother Alaric blamed the king’s clemency toward former followers of Maegor for the events that led to Walton’s fatal pursuit.
