King's Landing City Watch under Daemon
Fire & BloodThe King's Landing City Watch under Daemon was reshaped into the Gold Cloaks: a conspicuous, newly equipped force that made the capital more orderly while tying its reputation to Daemon Targaryen’s harsh rule. His reforms gave the watchmen a shared appearance and weapons; his punishments made their authority feared as well as visible.
Appointment and Reorganization
King Viserys appointed Daemon commander of the City Watch after the prince’s brief service on the small council. Governance had bored Daemon, but he took eagerly to command of the watch. He found its men ill-armed and dressed in a jumble of rags and oddments, and set about making the force more coherent and better equipped.
Each watchman received a dirk, a short sword, and a cudgel. Daemon outfitted them in black ringmail, provided breastplates for the officers, and issued long golden cloaks to wear with pride. The uniform gave the force a distinct public identity: from then on, its men were known as the Gold Cloaks.
Patrols and Enforcement
Daemon did not confine his command to re-equipping the watch. He often prowled the alleys of King's Landing alongside his men, making their presence a personal and visible part of his rule. The account credits the watch with making the city more orderly, but describes the discipline Daemon imposed as brutal.
His preferred punishments were severe: pickpockets could have their hands cut off, rapists could be gelded, and thieves could have their noses slit. Daemon also killed three men in street brawls during his first year as commander. The Gold Cloaks thus represented both a stronger policing presence and the violence with which their commander enforced it.
Reputation and Limits
The work made Daemon a familiar figure in the city’s poorer quarters. He was widely known in its wine sinks and gambling pits, as well as its brothels, where he favored a Lysene dancing girl known as Mysaria. His patrols and punishments joined the image of the prince to the everyday streets of the capital, earning him the names Prince of the City among his friends and Lord Flea Bottom among the smallfolk.
The Gold Cloaks later appear amid the turmoil of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s rule, when the Shepherd’s followers marched on the Dragonpit. Rhaenyra ordered the city’s remaining loyal gold cloaks to defend the royal dragons, but they were too few to offer a realistic chance of stopping the crowd. The episode shows the limits of the force’s ability to secure the city in a crisis, even after Daemon’s reforms had made it more organized and recognizable.
