Lorent Marbrand
Fire & BloodLorent Marbrand was a Kingsguard knight who remained with Rhaenyra Targaryen on Dragonstone when Viserys died, later serving her as Lord Commander of the Queensguard. His brief but consequential career under her rule links the royal guard’s divided loyalties to the queen’s increasingly severe judgments and, finally, to the disorder that engulfed King’s Landing. He died leading a force into Flea Bottom; only sixteen of the hundred knights and men-at-arms who entered with him returned.
Identity and Service
The Kingsguard was a sworn brotherhood of seven knights committed to defending the king and his kin. At the time of Viserys’s death, five of its members were in King’s Landing. Lorent was not among them: he and Ser Erryk Cargyll were with Rhaenyra on Dragonstone, separated from the royal court as the surviving white cloaks in the capital were summoned to rouse the small council. This division placed Lorent on the princess’s side of the emerging conflict before she openly organized her own council.
Lorent was present when Rhaenyra presided over the black council on Dragonstone. He stood there with Ser Erryk as one of the two Kingsguard supporting her, while Prince Daemon, Maester Gerardys, her sons, and the lords and officers gathered around the princess. The account does not describe Lorent speaking at this meeting or give him an independent plan. His presence instead establishes his role as one of the sworn protectors who accompanied Rhaenyra when her claim became the center of a rival court and war effort.
Lord Commander under Rhaenyra
After Rhaenyra took King’s Landing, Lorent was made Lord Commander of her Queensguard. The appointment formed part of a wider redistribution of offices: Luthor Largent was ennobled and given command of the gold cloaks, while Grand Maester Orwyle was imprisoned and Gerardys recognized by Rhaenyra as the true Grand Maester. Lorent’s elevation placed him at the head of the queen’s personal guard as her government rewarded supporters and punished those associated with her half-brother.
The position also brought him into the council’s debate over the dragonseeds. After Ulf White and Hugh Hammer defected, Bartimos Celtigar urged the queen to seize Addam Velaryon and Nettles before they could defect as well. Luthor Largent and Lorent supported this call for immediate action. Corlys Velaryon defended Addam and his brother Alyn as true Velaryons, while Gerardys argued that there was no proof of disloyalty and that judgment should wait for evidence. The disagreement set suspicion against caution: Lorent sided with those who saw the loss of additional dragons as an unacceptable risk, but the account records no separate argument from him. Rhaenyra’s suspicions prevailed, despite the protests of Corlys and Gerardys.
The fall of King’s Landing
As disorder spread through the capital, Lorent led one of the armed attempts to restore control. Ser Torrhen Manderly’s northmen had already met resistance around Fishermonger’s Square and River Row, and lost a quarter of their men while fighting back toward the Red Keep. Lorent then led a hundred knights and men-at-arms into Flea Bottom. Only sixteen returned. Lorent was not among them, and the account gives no further particulars about how he died.
His death reached Rhaenyra amid a rapid unravelling of her authority. She grieved when told that Lorent had been killed, even as she learned that Maidenpool had gone over to the enemy, Nettles had escaped, and her consort had betrayed her. The news of his loss was thus one part of a larger crisis: a commander of the Queensguard had fallen, the queen’s reach beyond the Red Keep was failing, and the armed force sent into the streets had come back almost entirely depleted. Ser Glendon Goode, newly appointed Lord Commander, brought Lorent’s body back, preventing the rioters from despoiling it.
Narrative role and ending
Lorent’s story is told through appointments, council decisions, and the consequences of fighting in the city rather than through private scenes or reported personal reflections. The evidence identifies him first by his service with Rhaenyra, then by the authority she entrusted to him, and finally by the risk he took as her rule collapsed. It does not specify his reasons for supporting the seizure of Addam and Nettles, or what happened to him in Flea Bottom beyond the fact that he did not return.
His trajectory contrasts the formal duties of royal protection with the increasingly dangerous conditions in which those duties had to be performed. As Lord Commander, Lorent held an office meant to guard the queen; during the street fighting, he led a force into a part of the capital where the queen’s authority could no longer ensure its safety. His absence from the sixteen survivors, and the recovery of his body by Goode, give his brief record a definite end while leaving the circumstances of his death unstated.
