Maegor’s Holdfast
Fire & BloodMaegor’s Holdfast is presented as a royal residence within the Red Keep and as the setting for two episodes that expose the vulnerability behind courtly authority: the confinement of Alicent Hightower and the death of Jaehaera Targaryen. Its private apartments became a place of enforced isolation, while one of its windows became the site of a royal child’s fatal fall.
Royal Apartments and Confinement
After the death of her last son, Aegon II Targaryen, Alicent refused to reconcile herself to the new king. The regents did not want her executed, both out of compassion and from fear that her death might renew the war. But she could not safely take part in court life: she cursed the king, might seize a guardsman’s dagger, and, at a meal with Jaehaera, urged the child to kill her husband in his sleep. Ser Tyland therefore confined Alicent to her own apartments in Maegor’s Holdfast. The account describes the imprisonment as gentle, but makes clear that it was still imprisonment.
Jaehaera’s Death
On the twenty-second day of the ninth moon of 133 AC, Jaehaera, queen of the Seven Kingdoms and the last surviving child of Aegon II, died at the age of ten after falling from a window in Maegor’s Holdfast onto the spikes below. Her death recalled that of her mother, Helaena Targaryen, who had died in a similar way. The parallel made the residence more than a backdrop: within its walls, the royal family experienced the repeated loss of a queen who died by a fall from a window.
Rumor and Uncertainty
The account reports Jaehaera’s death as a leap, but the circumstances remained uncertain to people in King’s Landing and even within the Red Keep. Suggestions included distress over Lady Rhaena’s miscarriage, jealousy of Lady Baela’s pregnancy, and neglect by Aegon III Targaryen, whom Jaehaera was said to love. These explanations circulated as rumors, not established causes. Maegor’s Holdfast consequently links a documented act of confinement with a death whose apparent circumstances prompted competing interpretations, while leaving the reason for Jaehaera’s fall unresolved.
