Olyver Bracken
Fire & BloodOlyver Bracken was a Kingsguard knight under Maegor who twice broke vows of loyalty: first by abandoning the king for Jaehaerys, then by turning the clemency that spared him into an opportunity to rebel. His rise and fall make him a pointed example of the risks Jaehaerys’s policy of mercy could carry when former enemies were entrusted with authority.
Service under Maegor and Clemency
Olyver was one of Maegor’s Seven Kingsguard. During the struggle that brought Jaehaerys to power, he and Raymund Mallery turned their cloaks and went over to the boy king. Yet Jaehaerys judged that their change of allegiance did not erase their broken vows: the Kingsguard were sworn to defend the king with their lives, and Olyver had failed that charge by abandoning Maegor.
Jaehaerys sentenced the surviving Kingsguard to death. At Princess Alysanne’s urging, however, they were offered the chance to exchange their white cloaks for black and join the Night’s Watch. Olyver accepted, as did Mallery and two other knights. The pardon spared his life, but placed him within a brotherhood whose vows would soon become the next test of his loyalty.
Command at the Wall and Revolt
In 50 AC, Olyver and Mallery were among the former supporters of Maegor who rebelled within the Night’s Watch. The Lord Commander had assigned the two knights command of the decaying forts of Rimegate and Sable Hall, with orders to restore them. Instead, they sought to make the castles their own seats and establish themselves as lords. Olyver’s revolt thus repeated the earlier breach of allegiance in a new setting: authority granted for service became the means by which he challenged the institution he had joined.
Defeat and Death
The uprising was brief. For every black brother who joined the rebels, ten remained true to their vows. Joined by Lord Walton Stark and his bannermen, the loyal Watch retook Rimegate. The oathbreakers were hanged, but Olyver was singled out for execution by Walton, who wielded the Stark ancestral sword Ice.
The rebellion also spread to Sable Hall, where the rebels fled beyond the Wall in hopes of joining the wildlings. Olyver’s recorded fate is distinct: he was captured in the recovery of Rimegate and executed by Walton Stark. His story ends not with the clemency that once offered him a place in the Watch, but with his death after leading a revolt against it.
Significance
Olyver’s trajectory links two political settlements. Jaehaerys’s decision to spare Maegor’s Kingsguard and send them to the Wall expressed a broader willingness to reconcile former enemies through service. Olyver’s later revolt exposed the vulnerability in that approach: pardon could remove a rival from court without ensuring his loyalty. His case also gives personal force to the distinction between changing sides and keeping faith; he had already broken one oath in the name of a new king, and ultimately broke the vows he accepted in exchange for his life.
