Samwell Tarly

Fire & Blood

Samwell Tarly, called Savage Sam, was the Lord of Horn Hill and one of the marcher lords who helped crush the first Vulture King’s rebellion. His role in the campaign combined battlefield force with the capture of the rebel leader, whose death marked the generally accepted end of the Second Dornish War.

Identity and Reputation

Samwell Tarly held Horn Hill and was known as Savage Sam. The name suited the account of his conduct in battle: he appeared with several thousand knights and archers against a much larger rebel host, and wielded the great Valyrian steel sword Heartsbane. His place among the marcher lords also connected his actions to a broader effort to contain rebellion along the Dornish Marches.

The Vulture Hunt

After failing to take Nightsong, the Vulture King abandoned the siege and marched west. Lady Caron sallied out behind him and joined a force led by Harmon Dondarrion, while Samwell Tarly suddenly blocked the rebel line of march with his own knights and archers. The Vulture King had twice as many men as the three forces opposing him combined, but most of his followers were untrained and undisciplined. Faced by armored knights in front and behind, his ranks broke; the Dornish fled toward the mountains, and the marcher lords pursued them. The rout and pursuit became known as the Vulture Hunt.

Capture and Death of the Rebel King

The Vulture King was taken alive. Samwell Tarly had him bound between two posts and left exposed, where he died of thirst and exposure. The story that vultures tore him apart was later rejected by the chronicle: the birds arrived only after his death. The distinction between the singers’ version and the account of his actual fate gives the episode a stark, unsentimental conclusion: the rebel who took his name from the birds was not killed by them.

Significance

The Vulture King’s death is generally treated as the end of the Second Dornish War, although the name is acknowledged as imprecise: no Dornish lords took the field, and Princess Deria continued to denounce the rebel while taking no part in his campaigns. Samwell Tarly’s part in the outcome was direct and consequential: his force helped break the rebel army, and he captured its leader alive. The account also notes that other men later adopted the title Vulture King, while leaving uncertain whether any shared the first rebel’s blood.
