Sea Smoke Town
Fire & BloodSea Smoke Town, known in the account as Spicetown, was a port on Driftmark that helped turn House Velaryon’s maritime position into wealth and influence. Its crowded wharves drew ships from the Free Cities and beyond, and the town later became the setting of the killing of Laenor Velaryon.
Setting and Growth
Spicetown developed from a village on Driftmark near High Tide. It was distinct from Hull, which grew when three fishing villages beneath the walls of Castle Driftmark joined together. As Lord Corlys Velaryon expanded shipbuilding and trade, Spicetown’s wharves and piers filled with vessels arriving from the Free Cities and farther afield.
Port and Trade
Driftmark lay athwart the Gullet, closer to the Narrow Sea than Duskendale or King’s Landing. This position helped Spicetown draw shipping that might otherwise have gone to those ports. The diversion strengthened House Velaryon’s already growing prosperity and influence, making the town part of the maritime base behind Corlys’s rise.
Laenor Velaryon’s Death
Spicetown was the site of a fair attended by Laenor Velaryon, husband to Rhaenyra Targaryen, when he was killed by his companion, Qarl Correy. Merchants later told Corlys that the two had argued loudly before Qarl drew his blade. By the time Corlys arrived to collect his son’s body, Qarl had fled, wounding several people who tried to stop him; claims that a ship waited offshore were reported but not established. The murder’s motive and circumstances remained disputed, leaving Spicetown associated not only with Velaryon trade but also with a killing whose truth was never resolved.
