Septon Rollo

Fire & Blood

Septon Rollo was a learned septon chosen by Jaehaerys Targaryen as one of the Seven Speakers, a party charged with persuading the realm to accept the king’s marriage to his sister, Alysanne Targaryen. His place among them linked religious learning to a deliberate campaign of royal reconciliation: the king sent preachers to answer opposition before it could grow into conflict.

Identity and Selection

The Seven Speakers comprised three men and four women. Rollo was one of the three septons, alongside the cunning Septon Baldrick and the fierce, elderly Septon Alfyn. The account calls Rollo learned but gives no further detail about his background or individual exploits. His selection placed him among an unusually varied group whose members carried their argument across the realm by wit, courage, and speech rather than arms.

Mission and Argument

Jaehaerys Targaryen dispatched the speakers to advocate for Alysanne Targaryen’s character and to answer objections to the siblings’ marriage. The group praised the queen’s piety, generosity, and love for her brother, while responding to challenges drawn from the Faith’s texts and earlier sermons. Their answer rested on the Doctrine of Exceptionalism, devised by the king with Septon Oswyck and especially Septon Barth: it affirmed the Faith’s general prohibition of incest while arguing that the Targaryens, with their Valyrian origins and dragons, were an exception.

Rollo’s specific route, speeches, and encounters are not individually described. The narrative presents his work as part of the Seven Speakers’ collective mission, whose travels became legendary, with later tellings said to enlarge their deeds. That distinction leaves Rollo’s personal contribution undefined while making clear the purpose his learning served: to give the king’s case a religious and persuasive voice throughout the realm.

Narrative Role

Rollo represents the learned clerical element of a campaign that answered religious resistance through public persuasion. His mission contrasts with the force used in earlier conflicts between the crown and its opponents: Jaehaerys chose speakers rather than soldiers to make the case for his marriage. The account identifies Rollo as one of the prominent names in this effort, but supplies no separate later fate or individual outcome for him.
