Shivering Sea

Fire & Blood

The Shivering Sea is a northern maritime frontier whose place in Fire & Blood is established chiefly through the voyages of Corlys Velaryon. Its waters mark the edge of increasingly hazardous exploration: Corlys sailed there in search of distant shores and, on a later northern voyage, encountered frozen seas and icebergs described as large as mountains.

Routes and Northern Waters

As a young sailor, Corlys travelled aboard the Ice Wolf to Braavos, Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, and Hardhome before turning into the Shivering Sea for Lorath and the Port of Ibben. The route connects familiar northern ports with waters farther east, presenting the sea as part of an expanding maritime passage rather than a boundary beyond which no Westerosi vessel could venture.

Corlys Velaryon’s Voyages

The Shivering Sea also became the destination of one of Corlys’s voyages aboard the Sea Snake, the ship he designed and built himself. On that expedition he became the first Westerosi to navigate the Thousand Islands and visit the bleak, cold shores of N’ghai and Mossovy. The voyage extended his reputation beyond the established trading routes and carried Westerosi exploration into regions the narrative presents as remote and difficult to reach.

On another voyage, Corlys and the Ice Wolf searched farther north for a passage around the top of Westeros. They found no passage, only frozen seas and icebergs as large as mountains. The account distinguishes this failed search from his successful travel into the Shivering Sea, while placing both within the same broader pattern of increasingly ambitious northern exploration.

Narrative Significance

The sea’s significance lies in the distance and risk that Corlys’s journeys make concrete. His voyages are recounted through named ships, ports, islands, and shores: the Shivering Sea is not described as an abstract edge of the map, but as one stage in a route that reached the Thousand Islands, N’ghai, and Mossovy. At the same time, the unsuccessful search for a passage around Westeros’s northern end sets a limit to that achievement: boldness and seamanship could carry Corlys far, but not through every barrier the northern waters presented.
