Unsullied

Fire & Blood

The Unsullied are renowned foot soldiers trained to absolute obedience, qualities that made them valuable both as warriors and as protectors. Their service to Lysaro Rogare shows how their military reputation could be turned into personal security—and how their loyalty endured even after his power collapsed.

Reputation and Training

The Unsullied are described as the finest foot soldiers in the world. Their training instilled absolute obedience, so a master who employed them need not fear defiance or betrayal. In Lysaro Rogare’s calculations, their discipline made them not merely soldiers but a safeguard against threats to his person.

Lysaro Rogare’s Guard

With rivals dying around him, Lysaro bought one thousand Unsullied from the slavers of Astapor to surround and protect himself. The purchase preceded his rise to the office of gonfaloniere and his attempt to gain greater power in Lys. Their presence secured his immediate protection, but did not prevent the collapse of the Rogare Bank or his flight from the city.

Flight and Loyalty

When Lysaro fled Lys at night, he took one hundred Unsullied with him. During the journey he was forced to sell most of them; by the time he and his remaining guards were caught at Volon Therys, only twenty were still with him. The Unsullied fought to protect him and died to a man. Their final stand contrasts with the shrinking force Lysaro had carried away from Lys: his power and resources dwindled, but the surviving guards remained loyal.
