Wolf Pack

Fire & Blood

The Wolf Pack was a free company made up wholly of northmen, formed when some of Cregan Stark’s followers chose overseas service over returning to a land gripped by winter. Its creation turned the hardships of the postwar journey south into an opportunity for a new military venture across the narrow sea.

Formation and Composition

The company emerged after the collapse of the Triarchy, which had left the Three Daughters hiring free companies at a pace and for wages that Ser Marston Waters could not match. For the northmen who had marched south with Cregan Stark, the prospect of going home to freeze or starve made employment abroad attractive. The Wolf Pack was one of two companies that arose from this choice, and unlike the other, it was composed entirely of northmen.

Command and Purpose

The Wolf Pack was commanded by Hallis Hornwood, known as Mad Hal, and Timotty Snow, the Bastard of Flint’s Finger. The evidence establishes its leadership and its origin as a mercenary company, but gives no further account of its organization, campaigns, or later history. Its formation nevertheless marks a practical consequence of the Northmen’s arrival in the south: some sought new lives and fortunes overseas instead of returning home.

Context and Significance

The Wolf Pack’s origins stand in contrast to the Stormbreakers, the other company formed by northmen leaving the south, which Ser Oscar Tully financed and led and which included men from across Westeros. The distinction was one of composition as well as leadership: the Wolf Pack remained specifically northern, while the Stormbreakers drew on the wider realm. Together, the companies show how the collapse of the Triarchy’s political order created an opening for former soldiers to turn their displacement into a new livelihood.
