Cruw Reon's sword

Fireblood

Cruw Reon’s sword is a stolen, cursed weapon whose recovery becomes one of the assignments in Tyrus’s plan to confront the Arch-Rike. Tyrus entrusts the task to Paedrin: the blade is needed to defend the party in the Scourgelands, while reclaiming it offers Paedrin a way to answer the dishonor Cruw Reon brought upon the Shatalin temple.

Theft and Curse

The sword’s history is presented through Tyrus’s account of what Paedrin’s master had told him. Cruw Reon, identified as a pupil, stole the weapon from the Shatalin temple. The theft did not leave him in possession of a usable prize: the sword cursed him, and he would no longer even touch it. The passage gives no further description of the curse or the blade’s physical appearance, but makes the curse central to the recovery problem.

A Task for Paedrin and Hettie

Tyrus frames the sword’s recovery as a continuation of a vow made by Paedrin’s master. That master had sworn to accompany Tyrus on his next journey or train someone to fulfill the promise. Tyrus says that Aboujaoude, a Bhikhu from Paedrin’s temple, died on the earlier journey so that Annon and Hettie could live; now he calls on Paedrin to join the work. Finding and using the sword would thus serve both the expedition’s immediate need and the obligation inherited from Paedrin’s teacher.

Tyrus gives Paedrin the responsibility to find the blade and wield it in the Scourgelands. He also assigns Hettie to help him claim it, explicitly invoking her Romani identity and training in theft. The sword is to be stolen back from the Shatalin temple, where it had originally been stolen by Cruw Reon. The reversal makes the recovery an act of restitution through the same means as the original taking, though the passage leaves the exact circumstances of the theft and retrieval unstated.

Role in the Expedition

The sword is one part of a broader division of urgent tasks. Tyrus warns that the Arch-Rike will unleash his power against them and argues that they must work together rather than die separately. Against that threat, the blade has a concrete defensive purpose: Tyrus needs Paedrin to use it in the Scourgelands. At the same time, he presents its recovery as a means of restoring the Shatalin temple from Cruw Reon’s dishonor. The weapon therefore joins the expedition’s practical survival to a promise of repair for the community from which Paedrin comes.
