Outriders

Fireblood

The Outriders are Wayland’s mounted frontier soldiers, raised through the kingdom’s ducal system to guard agricultural resources and patrol borders. Their stated immunity from ordinary Wayland law gives the organization a distinctive place in the story: they protect a vital trade and food-producing region, yet operate beyond the legal constraints that govern others.

Organization and Duties

Wayland’s king controls extensive farmland producing wheat and grain shipped to other kingdoms. The principal farms are governed by dukes, each of whom is required to provide riders for border patrols. These mounted soldiers are known as the Outriders, whose duty is to prevent neighboring kingdoms from taking crops or herds.

Their role connects military force to the kingdom’s agricultural and commercial interests. The patrols defend both the land’s produce and the flow of goods beyond Wayland, making the border an economic as well as territorial concern. The account also notes that travelers may carry money to secure peaceful passage through Wayland, indicating that the Outriders’ presence is a practical consideration for those moving across the kingdom.

Authority and Reputation

The Outriders are understood to be outside the reach of Wayland’s laws. This exemption sets them apart from ordinary soldiers subject to local rules and gives their patrol role an explicit element of unchecked authority. The organization is therefore presented not simply as a defensive force, but as one whose power at the frontier is accompanied by legal impunity.

Hettie’s warning to Paedrin reinforces the threat associated with Wayland’s armed men. She recalls the story of a Vaettir-born prisoner who had threatened his captors and, when his execution was attempted, caused the deaths of twelve officers at the gallows. Her account identifies the man as someone Paedrin had insulted in Havenrook and again that night, making the Outriders’ pursuit especially dangerous. The warning prompts the pair to flee rather than risk remaining in place.

Pursuit of Paedrin and Hettie

As Paedrin and Hettie run, horns sound behind them and torches appear ahead. Hettie recognizes the mounted force as the Outriders and the Waylander army. The riders have formed a barrier across the route, turning pursuit into an attempt to surround the fugitives.

The Outriders fire crossbows at Paedrin from five sides. He escapes the volley by rising into the air and then descends onto their leader, toppling him from his saddle. The encounter ends in confusion, showing the organization’s capacity to mobilize armed riders quickly while also revealing that its force can be challenged by Paedrin’s abilities.

Narrative Significance

The Outriders embody the overlap between border defense, economic protection, and exceptional authority in Wayland. Their stated purpose is to guard farms and prevent the seizure of crops and livestock, but their exemption from law complicates that protective role. In the immediate action, they are not abstract guardians of a frontier: their arrival closes the route ahead of Paedrin and Hettie, and their crossbow attack makes their institutional power a direct obstacle to escape.
