Lilia's heart-and-star necklace
FirebugLilia's heart-and-star necklace is a small silver keepsake that connects Cade, Lilia, and Ava across loss. Given by Cade to Lilia when they were young, it passes to Ava after her mother’s death; when Cade sees it on Ava, the necklace carries the grief of their shared history into the present.
Appearance and Provenance
The necklace consists of a simple silver chain bearing a small heart interlocked with a star. Ava wears it around her neck, where her hand sometimes goes to it unconsciously. Its modest form contrasts with the weight of its history: it was a gift from Cade to Lilia when they were not much older than Ava would be when she received it.
Cade earned the money for the necklace through mowing lawns, washing cars, and chopping firewood. Lilia valued it deeply; Ava remembers it as the one thing her mother valued besides her daughter. The pendant is therefore not merely an inherited possession but evidence of Cade’s early devotion to Lilia and of the life the three of them share through memory, even when they are separated by death.
From Lilia to Ava
After Lilia dies, Ava takes the necklace from her mother and slips it around her own neck. At the hospital, she has just lost her mother and is already planning to flee before the Coterie or Social Services can find her. In that moment, the necklace becomes the one material thing she can carry away from Lilia. Ava later describes it as all she has left of her mother.
The necklace also holds a connection to Cade. When Ava reaches his door, soaked, exhausted, and grieving, he takes her in and cares for her before asking what happened. He does not break down until he sees the heart and star. The familiar object makes Lilia’s absence undeniable to him, even as he continues to look after her daughter.
Meaning in the Story
The necklace moves between generations without changing its simple form: Cade gives it to Lilia, and Ava keeps it after Lilia’s death. Its passage makes family history tangible, linking a gift made in Cade and Lilia’s youth to Ava’s desperate departure from the hospital and her return to Cade’s care.
Its emotional force comes through recognition rather than explanation. Ava’s presence already signals that something terrible has happened, but the necklace is what brings Cade’s own grief into view. For Ava, it is a keepsake she can wear; for Cade, it is also a reminder of Lilia and of the bond that continues through the child he protects.
