Venus's platinum talisman
FirebugVenus's platinum talisman is a wearable ward whose fire rune and remarkable resistance make it a defining object in Ava's blood-pact ceremony. Venus keeps it on a chain around her neck; during the ritual, she places it in Ava's cut, bloodied palm, where it disappears into blood and ash, then retrieves it untouched by fire. Its return to Venus's neck closes the ceremony with the object—and the power it represents—still firmly in her possession.
Appearance and Use
The talisman is set in platinum and bears a rune for fire. At a later dinner, Ava observes that it is roughly the size and shape of a Scrabble tile, hanging visibly from Venus's dress. Candlelight glints from the platinum, making the ward conspicuous to Ava as she considers the possibility of attacking Venus.
Venus wears it at her neck, attached to a chain, and keeps it on even during the blood-pact ceremony. The scene establishes it as one of her wards, while Ava's account of the later confrontation emphasizes the practical obstacle it poses: Venus always wears it, and Ava regards it as making other wards seem useless. Ava also recognizes that the talisman is not necessarily Venus's only protection; she may have secondary runes elsewhere on her body, and guards nearby further complicate any attempt to harm her.
The Talisman in the Blood-Pact Ceremony
When Venus cuts Ava's hand with a silver knife, she lifts the ward from the chain around her neck and places it rune-side up in Ava's palm. Ava sees the fire design before the charm disappears into the blood and ash. The placement makes the talisman part of the ceremony's central exchange: Ava's blood is collected, and Venus declares that Ava now belongs to the Coterie.
After the bloodied linen and the talisman are dropped into a brass bowl of hot coals, the linen catches fire, but the ward remains untouched. The witch collects more of Ava's blood and ash, and Venus uses her dagger to retrieve the talisman from the bowl. It is dipped in cool water, then returned to its usual place around Venus's neck. The sequence gives the ward a tangible role in the ritual without suggesting that it is consumed or permanently altered by the ceremony.
Protection and Conflict
The talisman's appearance at the dinner sharpens the contrast between Ava's power and her inability to use it freely against Venus. Ava imagines burning Venus, but the ward is always present, accompanied by the possibility of additional runes and the protection of guards. Her attention to the small, glinting object turns it into a concrete sign of the defenses that keep Venus beyond reach.
The ceremony and the later confrontation give the talisman complementary meanings. In the ritual, it passes briefly into Ava's bleeding hand but returns intact to Venus; later, it remains a visible barrier between Ava's desire to strike and the danger of doing so. Its survival in the hot coals reinforces that the object is not merely decorative: it endures the fire that consumes the linen and remains attached to Venus's continuing control.
