Venus's silver amulet
FirebugVenus’s silver amulet is the long silver chain she wears as a ward, one part of a layered defense that also includes additional wards at her ankle, wrist, and waist. Its removal by Lock during the final confrontation strips away protections Venus has kept on even as Ava challenges her apparent invulnerability.
Appearance and Function
The amulet is described as a long silver chain at Venus’s neck. It belongs to her wards, which Venus refuses to take off. When Ava uses a separate chain to crush Venus’s throat, Venus’s body begins rebuilding the damaged tissue, pushing the fine silver chain of her ward up through the flesh. The scene makes the amulet’s position on Venus’s body visible amid her rapid healing, but does not establish that the chain itself causes that healing or specify every effect of the ward.
Removal During the Confrontation
Venus is held partly within a tree while Ryan tries to free her. Lock searches her and, after finding what he sought, later reaches into her jacket, pulls out the long silver chain, and tears it from her neck. He also removes her backup wards from an ankle, a wrist, and her waist. The sequence distinguishes the amulet from Ava’s own chain, which Ava has used to strangle Venus: Lock’s removal of Venus’s defenses gives Ava the opening to continue confronting her.
Significance
The amulet embodies Venus’s reliance on protection even as her pride makes her seem indestructible. Ava’s mother has warned that Venus will never take off her wards and that her hubris may eventually destroy her. In the confrontation, the defenses are not simply left in place: Lock physically removes them, while Venus’s healing body makes the neck chain an obstacle that must be exposed and stripped away. The act does not itself kill Venus, but it helps turn the encounter toward Ava’s sustained attack.
