An Alternative to Hiding Survival is not a solution At McGee cottage, Andrew gradually recognizes that the family cannot remain in hiding forever. He fears for Charlie’s future, worries that his own health may fail, and rejects the possibility of surrendering her to the Shop’s control. A paper trail begins Andrew decides to tell the story to elected representatives and newspapers. He wants public knowledge to make a secret seizure more difficult, even though he cannot know whether anyone will believe him or whether the Shop can suppress the account. The letters are an attempt to convert private terror into a matter of public responsibility.

Charlie recognizes that her father had already sent a letter, but he cannot tell her whether the paper received it. Their attempt to reach a national audience is postponed by capture, yet the intention shapes Charlie’s later decision to seek journalists herself.

She understands that a local paper may be too easy for the Shop to suppress and that a larger, independent outlet is needed. A deliberate approach Charlie makes her way to the New York Public Library and asks for a nationwide publication without ties to the government. A librarian directs her to Rolling Stone, where she requests a writer and says she has a story to tell and something to show. The novel ends with the possibility of exposure rather than confirmation of what the magazine will publish.
