Camp Arifjan

Fool Me Once

Camp Arifjan is the Kuwait military base where Maya Stern was deployed when she received a life-altering call from Joe Burkett. The location connects a private family catastrophe to the distance and procedures of military life, and later becomes a key point in establishing Maya’s alibi after Claire is shot.

Setting and Time

The call came at noon on the base, when it was 5:00 a.m. at home. The difference in local time marks the distance between Maya’s deployment and the home she had left behind. The scene returns to that moment in a flashback as Maya makes her way to the back door.

The Call from Joe

Joe told Maya that he had bad news, then fell silent when she asked what had happened. The silence stood out against the pattern she knew from military life: until then, terrible news had usually traveled in the other direction, from the Middle East west to the United States. Maya also recalled that service members did not personally make death notifications; a designated officer, accompanied by a pastor and dressed in uniform, delivered the news in person. At Camp Arifjan, Maya was instead on the receiving end of a call from home.

Deployment and the Investigation

Later, Roger Kierce asked whether Maya had been deployed in the Middle East when Claire was shot. Maya identified Camp Arifjan in Kuwait as her location. Kierce explained that investigators had checked her whereabouts, briefly raising the possibility that she might have returned home, shot Claire, and then gone back to Kuwait before Joe’s death. Their checks ruled that out: Maya’s alibi was rock solid. Camp Arifjan thus serves both as the setting of her remembered phone call and as verifiable evidence of her absence.
